Si tratta – prosegue Maccherini – di interventi complessi e da valutare attentamente. Il dispositivo artificiale VAD, Ventricular Assist Device, che noi utilizziamo già da 8 anni come alternativa al trapianto, impiantato su 36 pazienti, in questi casi viene inserito senza circolazione extracorporea ma a cuore battente. Si tratta di una pompa in titanio, piccola come una pila, che funziona grazie a una batteria esterna attraverso un cavo elettrico collegato alla testa, in prossimità dell’orecchio. Per pazienti che non possono effettuare il trapianto di cuore – (\*) – possiamo quindi optare per il dispositivo VAD in casi selezionati e ben studiati” External link
